The Becks effect

Milan will have David Beckham available in January. Tom Barclay wonders if his addition could be the difference between Scudetto success and also-rans Touted as a PR move last January, Beckham’s switch to Italy soon proved the doubters wrong as he made a worthy contribution to the Milan side, playing 18 League games and scoring two goals.

The former England captain was in Carlo Ancelotti’s side on merit, and despite being 33 at the time, his busy displays were full of running and invention that was lacking in the side prior to his arrival. And let’s be honest, 33 in Ancelotti’s team last year could almost be considered young.

The Italian style of play suited and will still suit Beckham’s game down to the ground. Played at a slower pace than the English League, but with a stronger focus on technique and team organisation, Golden Balls flourished in Serie A and I fully expect him to do it again.

But the question is – can he provide the missing link for Leonardo’s side to mount a serious title challenge this season?

Milan are in fantastic form right now, with five wins in a row in the League since their 2-2 draw away at Napoli, and even then that was thanks to two stoppage-time goals for the home side.

It all seems a very long time away from the 0-4 mauling to Inter in the second game of the season, when the manager’s future was already being called into question.

The team seems quite settled though with Alexandre Pato, Ronaldinho and Marco Borriello forming an attacking triumvirate ahead of Andrea Pirlo, Massimmo Ambrosini and Clarence Seedorf, so one wonders if Beckham would instantly get into the side. He need only ask Rino Gattuso how hard it is.

But Beckham’s work-rate, range of passing and set-piece delivery will add something new to the team that is likely to see Leonardo find a way to incorporate the Englishman. You can almost already imagine the 60-yard cross-field passes pinpointing into Pato’s stride that could see the young Brazilian tear up the scoring charts.

With the options the Rossoneri would then boast, Jose Mourinho should and probably would be wary of the red-and-black side of town.
